Day 88: Marsabit to Shaba

Michael Palin - Pole to PoleThe Shaba Lodge is a wonderful hotel, unashamedly modern but not ostentatiously luxurious, skilfully landscaped among tall trees along the Vaso Nyiro river. Last night at Marsabit we had water but no electricity, the night before that we had electricity and no water, tonight we have a swimming-pool, double beds, mosquito nets, a bedroom and a sitting-room. But the shock of comfort brings with it less pleasant shocks. One is the realization that, for the first time since leaving the Old Cataract Hotel, Aswan, we are back on the tourist trail - back in the world of aimlessly pointing video cameras, bandy white legs and loud, complaining voices.

'Where are those bats coming from?'

'I don't know where they're coming from.'

'They came right down and zoomed my head. It was horrible!'

I have to physically restrain myself from shouting, 'Then why come here? Why ever leave home at all?'

Maybe it's just that I've been away from home too long.
