Pole to Pole
Day 137: Punta Arenas

'We're definitely not going today.'
'Tomorrow?'
Bruce shrugs. 'I'll come over here at about 7.15 tomorrow morning . . . we'll make a decision by 7.30.'
I must be looking at him like a dog waiting for its dinner. He doesn't want to disappoint me but he can't bear me looking at him like that.
'It's very common to have five- to ten-day delays, with the weather . . . not to put you off.'
Back to the Cabo do Hornos with its plaintive sign in the elevator: 'Please Push Only One Time the Button'. I'm in limbo-land. All dressed up and no Pole to go to. We visit a nearby penguin colony but a fierce storm hits us and Nigel is unable to film.
An early night after a bad paella. Lie awake worrying about footling things. What happens if we're stranded there until Christmas? Did I buy enough underpants? Is Mercury still in retrograde?
