Around the World in 80 Days

Day 6: 30 September

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 DaysI run at a gentle pace back through streets with unexpected names like Evans Street (after the Englishman who excavated the nearby Minoan capital of Knossos) and Duke of Beaufort Avenue ('Leoforos Dhoukos Bofor'). Back on board ship, Said Achmed Sabra is still wanted at the Purser's office.

Today's passenger intake has changed the character of the Espresso Egitto considerably. The leisurely sprinkling of smiling Egyptians and dour Scots with whom we left Venice has now been swamped by dreadlocked German bikers and package holidaymakers on 36-hour excursions to Egypt. There are a lot of thin, badly dressed Egyptians with plastic carrier bags and resigned, unsmiling faces. The sound of hawking and spitting is almost as frequent now as Mr Lalli's increasingly desperate announcements. As we pass the long, mediaeval harbour wall and ease into the eastern Mediterranean, we're still 200 short of a full complement of passengers. What it must be like when full hardly bears thinking about.
