Around the World in 80 Days
Day 43: 6 November

By the time we land there is no time for a wash and brush-up before the party. So straight to The 1997, a small, smartly furnished club which doubles as an art gallery and trebles as a jazz club. There to meet me is Sam with my suit. Before I can even try it on a photo has to be taken of the two of us together. The fact that I'm hot and a little irritable doesn't seem to matter, and I now understand why the smiles on so many of his celebrity photos look a little cracked. A fashionable young man sits at the bar and, taking him to be the manager, I ask where I might go to try on my new outfit. He indicates a door which turns out to lead to the gents. I am beginning to bitterly regret this whole enterprise when the door to the gents swings open as I'm in mid-change, catches me off balance and sends me spinning, and half de-trousered, into one of the cubicles.
