Around the World in 80 Days
Day 65: 28 November
Midway through the meal, and six hours out of Los Angeles, Las Vegas appears, materialising from nothing, like a magician preceded by a flash of light. 'Stardust', 'Circus Circus', 'Caesar's Palace' . . . familiar names blaze out of the night sky. Las Vegas station is a cursory affair, like the rest of the city, not quite believable. Almost immediately we're in pitch darkness and emptiness again. Clocks on an hour between here and Salt Lake City. Not enough beds for Passepartout and myself so recline the seat in coach class. A sociable atmosphere. Meet a man who uses the train for business. He's an accountant out of Chicago, with work spread out in front of him, even at midnight. 'It confuses some clients, impresses others. This is the way I like to do it. If people don't understand that then I don't want them as clients.'
A lady called Beth, insubstantially slim and softly spoken, has set up a business of her own in upstate New York, making and selling her own dresses.
'Can you make a living out of that?'
'Not really,' she smiles almost apologetically. 'I deal in real estate as well.'
Onwards into the darkness of the land of opportunity.
