Around the World in 80 Days

Day 71: 4 December

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 DaysThe sound of the words on the controls of The Saudi Moon II (crossed out and I written in). Captain Rodebaek looks like the archetypal sea-captain. He's round, ruddy-faced and smiles readily. He even has a slightly wandering 'Long John Silver' eye. He's not worried about the late start. The Maersk line is renowned for its timekeeping. He'll easily make up any backlog, and we should be alongside in Le Havre next Sunday at 4.30 a.m. It's a bit earlier than he'd like but he doesn't trust the French stevedores after Sunday lunch.

The only jarring note in all of this is the mention of Le Havre. Both Passepartout and myself were under the impression that next Sunday the Leda Maersk would be at Felixstowe. Ah, no . . . that's the next day.

Over a breakfast of yoghurt, coffee, eggs, bacon, and thick rich white bread baked on board by a German chef, we discuss the implications of the Le Havre delay, and various alternatives are proposed, ranging from catching the Le Havre-Southampton ferry, to a more tele-worthy ship-to-ship transfer at the mouth of the Thames and a launch up to Westminster Pier. No one feels we should waste time on the French coast.
