Michael Palin - Hemingway AdventureErnest Hemingway had first set foot on foreign soil at Bordeaux, France on 1 June 1918.

He had been accepted as a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross Ambulance Service on the Austro-Italian front line.

After a few days in Paris, sampling cultural delights like the Folies Bergère, he and his fellow volunteers took the overnight Paris-Lyon Méditerranée Express, across the French Alps and through the Fréjus tunnel to Milan.

His train steamed into Garibaldi Station on the morning of 7 June 1918.
