Around the World in 80 Days

Day 26: 20 October

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 Days'It's out of the question for a sane man to spend his life jumping from a steamer onto a train and from a train onto a steamer, on the pretext of going round the world in 80 days! No, all these antics will come to an end in Bombay, you can be sure of that.'

I pondered on Passepartout's words as I lay in bed after waking at dawn from a night during which my room had very gently rocked from side to side. Passepartout's gloomy prediction is nearer to my experience than his own. He and Fogg arrived here in eighteen days, and left on a train across India within three and a half hours, during which time Fogg saw nothing of the city save for the inside of the station restaurant, where he was served with cat disguised as rabbit.

I'm eight days behind Fogg, and as yet I have no onward passage from Madras to Singapore. The dhow was a wonderful week out of life; now the realities must be faced and some clear thinking done. But somehow Bombay is not the best city, nor India the best sub-continent for clear thinking.
