Day 94: Samal Island

Michael Palin - Full CircleWe are resting up at Pearl Farm Resort on the island of Mindanao, having escaped by plane and boat from the noise and pollution of Manila, now six hundred miles away to the north-west. The stresses and strains of South-East Asia have been soothed away, to the sounds of 'Winter Wonderland', on the palm-fringed shores of Samal Island, one of over 7000 that make up the Philippine archipelago. It's an hour's ride away in an outrigger canoe from Davao, the bustling, Chinese-influenced second city of the Philippines. Davao claims, in terms of urban area, to be the largest city in the world, but from the wooden balcony of my cabin on stilts it is a mere smudge on an horizon dominated by the sprawling rain-forested slopes of Mount Apo, rising 9600 feet behind it. The mountain looks broad and benign, but we are on the Pacific Rim and Apo is a volcano, and an active one too.
