Around the World in 80 Days
Day 43: 6 November
Sunday morning. The only thing that irritates me about this marvellous room is that I can't pull the curtains open. Nose around behind chairs and up and down the walls searching for those pulley systems that hotels like to torment their guests with, and am about to give up in disgust when I notice the word 'curtains' on a space-age control panel beside the bed. One press and they soundlessly swing apart. The start of my seventh week away from home. Almost halfway round the world and yet so much about Hong Kong is familiar that I feel closer to home than at any time since I set out. There's an article about Jamie Lee Curtis and John Cleese in the arts section of the paper, talking about the film we all made last year. The South China Post leads with Maggie Thatcher and her triumphal visit to Poland. A long and sycophantic piece, and it comes as no surprise to learn that the South China Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Breakfast of muesli, fresh orange juice, croissant, brioche and coffee.
