Day 208: Iquitos

Michael Palin - Full CircleWe are becalmed in Iquitos waiting for a river boat to take us to Leticia on the Colombian border. It is not a popular destination, it seems. Everyone has a rumour to cap a rumour about Colombia. Dark tales of narcos and guerrillas.

A group of very big Americans currently in Iquitos are said to be part of a DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) offensive against cocaine factories in the Colombian jungle. They claim to be tourists whose plane has been delayed.

Today we shall hopefully be on our way. A tourist ship is leaving this afternoon, travelling down the Amazon bound for Santa Rosa. Not a moment too soon. It's mid-summer. The temperatures have been back to the seasonal average over the last few days, in the high nineties, and, with little to do but think about their families back home going on holidays without them, the crew is restless.
