Day 229: San Diego to Los Angeles

Michael Palin - Full CircleThe feeling of being back on home ground grows as I spend a day off amongst the Hockneys at the County Museum of Art and up in the Hollywood Hills with Eric Idle and family and friends in the afternoon. Returning home from Eric's, things take a less familiar turn. My taxi-driver says he is an Armenian physicist who in the bad old days of the Soviet Union was imprisoned in Siberia for two years for being a member of Andrei Sakharov's reform party. I tell him we have been in the Kolyma region and seen the camps.

He glances in the mirror as if to check I'm being serious.

'You see politic prisoners?' he asks.

I shake my head.

We turn onto the freeway and run down past the Hollywood Bowl. A fine, un-smogged vista of LA lies below us. The driver is looking at me in the mirror again.

'City of pleasure,' he says.

'Are you happy driving a cab?' I ask.

'No, of course not.'
