Around the World in 80 Days

Day 62: 25 November

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 DaysBreakfast at 9.30. The Singaporean food on the Garnet has been good but I miss fresh-baked bread, freshly ground coffee and milk. I've been existing on instant coffee and Coffee-Mate, 'America's Favorite Non-Dairy Creamer', which I see is full of non-dairy goodies like: 'Corn Syrup solids, Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil' and any one of the following oils - 'Coconut, Cottonseed, Palm, Palm kernel, Safflower or Soybean. Sodium Caseinate, Mono and Di-Glycerides, Dipotassiun Phosphate, Artificial Flavor and Annatto (a vegetable derived artificial color)'. The outlook for fresh food doesn't look hopeful as I approach a new continent.

At ten o'clock our satellite fix is 36.35 North, 129.21 West, 4380 miles from Tokyo and making 20.6 knots. Seven hours behind schedule. Nothing much to do but wait. At lunchtime the sun comes out, and, for the first time since we left Japan, I feel its warmth on my face. Inspired to try and make 10 kilometres round the deck, and do so. Shower, read and bask in general feeling of achievement.
