Day 100: Seronera to Lake Manyara

Michael Palin - Pole to PolePull back the curtains at 7 a.m. to find myself staring into the wide, curious eyes of a vervet monkey, nose pressed up against the window, watching me unblinkingly. I admonish him sternly.

'You monkey!'

Basil thinks this is very funny, but we have been on the road for three months . . .

It is a clear, fresh, glistening morning and I cannot quite believe that I am alive and in the Serengeti and only hours away from the Ngorongoro Crater, the second largest in the world. And me a schoolboy from Sheffield.

Just then I hear, from the passageway, the unmistakable sound of other ex-schoolboys from Sheffield.

'Hurry along, Clifford!' . . . An early morning chorus of Yorkshire accents recedes towards the restaurant. Later I see them being squeezed into a fleet of white mini-vans and driven off to the lions.
