Around the World in 80 Days

Day 74: 7 December

Michael Palin - Around the World in 80 DaysFeeling no better. Headache persists. No appetite for breakfast but climb up to bridge in the hope that Atlantic breezes will clear my head. More than breezes. A Force 8 wind blowing East North East is covering the sea with spray, and the prunes and helium are rearing and plunging over the waves. We're lying 1453 nautical miles from New York, a little more than halfway to Europe, Newfoundland is 580 miles North West and the Azores archipelago 600 miles South East. It's a warm 61 degrees but very wet. Looking out at the Atlantic from the rainlashed windows of the bridge, ten storeys above the hard-running waves I can hardly conceive of the courage, or foolhardiness that would make anyone want to cross all that alone.

At lunch today there is a big discussion about the elegant damask tablecloth on the captain's table. Jesper, the A.P. Moller company representative, says that in future, because of a ruthless cost-cutting exercise, the new tablecloths will not have the white Maersk line star woven in to them. We all take the captain's side on this one and urge the company to reconsider!

It'll be the tureens next.
