On the bridge of the Yavari with Meriel Larken and Carlos the captain.
Michael Palin - Full CircleThere is no one else here so we are kept waiting for some time. Then, once our papers have been laboriously and leisurely checked, a border guard unhooks a chain slung between two dry-stone walls and lets us out of Bolivia. We climb over a rise, through an arch, off Bolivian cobbles and onto Peruvian tarmac. Outside the Peruvian Migraciones, bowler-hatted ladies home slowly in on us, holding out every kind of alpaca accessory - gloves, sweaters, bags, ponchos, pullovers, socks and knitted hats with ear flaps. Inside, the large-spectacled Japanese features of Alberto Fujimori 'Presidente de la Republica del Peru' gaze down from a frame on the wall. He looks keen, healthy and ready for business, as though he might be a model for the glasses he's wearing.

Run along by the pale-crown totora-fringed shores of Lake Titicaca, two-thirds of which extends into Peru, until we reach the town of Puno, lively with St Anthony's Day crowds and street music.
