Day 230: Los Angeles
Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles.
He gives off an air of constant, barely-controlled energy. He manages to be both laconic and garrulous. He was independent when he started with his first helicopter twelve years ago; now he's on regular contract to CBS news. He works ten to seven with regular spots to fill on lunchtime and early evening bulletins. It's not what he wants to do.'I want to make low-budget monster movies.'
His wife, who has been monitoring the emergency service radio transmissions, picks up word of some action. It sounds unlikely to me.
'We have a shooting on Sesame Street.'
Bob raises his eyes briefly at this then moves into action like a man who wouldn't swap his job with anyone. Grabbing radio sets, headphones, cellphones, bleepers and any other attachments he can find, he bundles us into a car and drives fast to where two million dollars worth of helicopter and camera are waiting.
We're strapping ourselves in when word comes across the radio from Marika.
'Suspect in custody.'
Bob curses and we all bale out. This happens twice in the space of an hour.
'Something'll come up,' he reassures me. 'It always does.'
'Always?'
He nods vehemently.
'Look, there are ten million people here and five million are fucking crazy!'
