Sahara - Mhamid, Morocco

Sahara - Mhamid, Morocco
To photograph a full-blown sandstorm is a physical impossibility, because sand fills the
sky and blocks out the sun. Shifting sand simply will not register on film, unless it is perfectly
backlit. A high wind was blowing through the desert in Mhamid, where the Moroccan highway abruptly vanishes. We took refuge from the storm in the tent of a Touareg gentleman who ran a ‘Desert Experience’ camel train for tourists. When one of his assistants, who was dispatched to calm the camels, got sand in his eyes, the task of illustrating high wind in the desert was finally accomplished.
