Himalaya - Rumbur Valley, Pakistan

Himalaya - Rumbur Valley, Pakistan
The culturally unique Kalash tribe lives in three well-hidden valleys along the Afghanistan border southwest of Chitral. With their own language, customs and religion, they are part of the original group who settled in the Hindu Kush. The Muslims called them Kafirs (pagans), after Islam successfully pushed aside Buddhism in the valleys beyond. Today only about 3000 Kalash (meaning black, for the colour of their clothing) people are left in the 20 small settlements; a tiny oasis of colours and laughter, just around the corner from the rising tide of Islamic fundamentalism and Sharia law that is sweeping across the North-West Frontier Province.
