Pole to Poll

Award-winning author Michael Palin has been voted the nation’s favourite travel guide with three quarters of Brits (74%) reluctant to leave the country without him, a poll from Expedia.co.uk reveals.

The Around the World in 80 Days star beat fellow writers Bill Bryson (65%), Graham Greene (45%), Colin Thubron (28%) and William Dalrymple (27%) in a survey that asked over 2,000 holidaymakers about their favourite travel books.

"Travelling is something I enjoy enormously and being able to share my adventures with others is a privilege. To have been voted the best travel writer by my fellow countrymen is a huge honour and I'm glad people take pleasure in sharing my experiences through the books I've had so much fun putting together," says Palin.

Brits were revealed as a nation of culture vultures with a third choosing guidebooks (33%) or travel literature (31%) as their favourite type of holiday read, ahead of romance (28%) and comedy (27%) genres.

"Reading is such an important part of travelling – whether it’s researching the next place to visit on a trip or getting lost in fiction from the country you’re visiting. It’s all about getting as much out of your experience abroad as possible.

"Palin manages to infuse each of his books with such enthusiasm not only the countries he visits but also of travelling; it’s no wonder he’s been crowned the nation’s favourite travel guru," says Jonathan Cudworth, director of product management, Expedia.co.uk.
