Re: The South is better? Who are you kidding? by bIG bLOGGER on 20 August 2008 5:48pm

As has been said, this North-South (supposed)Divide thingy is somewhat ridiculous. It brings out all the racial bigots to air their ridiculous views. Jeff Randall, writing in the DAILY TELEGRAPH,said that folks in Caithness,on the top of Scotland,,refer to Inverness as "doon sooth"! Jeremy Paxman,NEWSNIGHT presenter, got into trouble for saying he thinks Britain is being run by "a sort of Scottish Raj"...(step forward:Gordon Brown;Douglas Alexander;Alastair Darling;and possibly also Michael Martin, the Speaker of the House..)
Paxman rubbed it in by saying he thinks most Scots walk around with a huge chip on their shoulders..and described the treasured national poet,Robert Burns'work as "sentimental doggerel"...
His teasing or provoking of the Scots has been going on for over 2 years.Paxman himself is a proud Yorkshireman, who once said: "Imagine coming from, say,Middlesex. What a terrible thing to have to live with..."
This is just racial and geographical bigotry,in my opinion. But the Scots are fighting back! A group calling themselves "United Scottish poets" wrote:--
Jeremy Paxman says he spurns
The poetry of our Robbie Burns
A wee sleekit timorous mousie
Wouldn'ae find room in Paxo's housie
His verses,he says, are sentimental doggerel
And what does HE know? SCOTLAND says
"Aye!Bugger All!!".
(Amen).

Old Paxo ought to sort his head out. I regret to say he is one of 'us'.

Very interesting article.I wish I'd seen the TV programme. Given that Paxo has led a privileged life, and given the hardships of his (newly-discovered) ancestors(especially his great-grandmother) he should soften his views and be more all-embracing of regional variations.

Paxo does tend to condescend from a great height.

He can - and does = gove politicians a hard time, but when it comes to the Rupert Murdoxhs of this world & others who have his kind of powwer, no chance. I wonder if he knows he's a (not very)
big fish in a small pond.

The ego shows quite a lot these days, I find, with him.

Nowt wrong with Sunderland/Gateshead,(as of course you mean, bB)-all I have against Sunderland is that they employed
my much-hated old boss as city librarian at one time. Fools.

My sister and her husband met Paxman by chance some years ago and he later stayed in the hotel they had near Aviemore. They thought he was very nice.
