Cal Ripken by tucsonmike on 13 May 2007 5:07am

Well, I know it will get Patty's attention. I just finished reading his book about motivation. I will also post later in our book review category.
Now, I have to go watch British comedy.

Yeah, Mike. I see your post about Cal. Did I tell anyone here that I'm going to his induction ceremony in Cooperstown? Hope I don't melt. it'll beb hot and humid that day, I'm sure.

Oooooh Patty I'm so excited for you! I'm so glad you're getting to go for your favorite player. I went to Carlton Fisk's HoF Induction ceremony in 2000. We wound up lodging in Utica, a beutiful town but a little ways away, because Cooperstown lodging went so fast.

Anyway I have one word for you for the day of the ceremony - S-U-N-S-C-R-E-E-N.

HAHAHAHA, No, Larry has to carry the banner I'm making! Well, we'll both have to hold it up with dowel sticks. Yeah, we're going and we are staying about an hour away, at a B&B. The local inns were booked ages ago. We stayed there about 4 years ago , at The White House B&B, owned by the pres of the chamber of commerce,He told us then that you have to book at least a year in advance. We kept putting it off for one reason or another and , of course, didn't have any luck any closer than where we are. Beleive me, I scoured every village and town on and off the map!!!!!! I feel lucky we fund anything at all. We could have gone with a group on a bus trip, but preferred otherwise.

I understand it's first come, first served, so I am not expecting to get anywhere near the man, to be honest, but it will be fun being there nonetheless. They have already said this inductiion will draw more people than any other in baseball history due to Cal's popularity. It'll be a madhouse for sure. And, Cori, sunscreen is never far from my reach. Thanks for the reminder!

Actually, Cal's not really my favorite player. But he's definitely someone to admire and of whom to be proud. After him, Baltimore might not see any HOF'ers for a long time. We really don't have any players near ready to retire or good enough to be inducted right now. Some are waiting in the wings though, if they don't jump ship and go to another team for bigger bucks, a very likely scenario these days. Most team budgets just can't compete with the big bucks of NY and Boston. Salary caps are definitely needed. It's ruining the game not having any.

Cori, I bet you had a grand time at the ceremony when you went. Cooperstown is so quaint and friendly. But tell me, I know eateries are few and far between. Did you take food with you that day or buy it someplace? Were there concession stands set up near the field site that day?

If I remember correctly, people came around with concessions just as if you were at the ball park. Can't guarantee they still do. There were some people picnicking. This was before 9/11. There is probably info about this at the HoF website? Maybe you can bring stuff in clear containers a la Daytona 500? You'd better check with them.
