French in Tucson? by tucsonmike on 15 May 2007 5:35am
Yes, four years of high school French and when they found out I speak it at work, I get to take the occasional Quebecois phone call with the other three French speakers.

Shaking my head. My father proved to be right by making me take it. I am not informing HIM of this of course!:-)

Have you spent much time in Quebec, Mike? I usually can pick up about 50% of French conversations but, with Quebecoise, it drops to 10 to 20%.

I have been to Montreal several times Geraldine. Yes, Quebecois French is very different and very nasal. They do not admit it, but they also throw a lot of English words in.

This should be good. I do not know where our fourth French speaker is from. You have me, Twaje, from Congo and Anastase from Rwanda.

Well, I found out our fourth French speaker has been here the longest. Martha is from Trier, Germany. She went to Belgium and France all the time, so that is how she learned French. (She has never been to Berlin, for example).

Twaje is from Congo, Anastase from Rwanda. They grew up being taught in French in school.

I practice with Anastase. It is like batting practice in softball. Anastase tells me, there is not question I speak the language. It is a matter of practice and getting the accent correct. My first call in French threw the caller completely. He heard the American accent, had trouble understanding me, and was shocked an American knew ANY French. I am learning to work on my accent. Well, my accent is American, my pacing, Haitian. Anastase told me we get some calls from Louisiana Cajuns in French and Tahitians living in Hawaii.

The mother and stepfather (he who is the brother of Dame Maggie Smith) of my friend here are moving to the South of France next month. They will be living near the Pyranees. So I reckon I can practice Spanish as well (oh great, Spanish with a Norteno Mexicano accent, ay carrumba)!!!

The French community is growing in Tucson - but why? There are French French, African French, Canadian French, Swiss, Belgians ... the International School in Tucson has a French program. Sacre bleu! Something is going on.
