I'm Back! by pandab on 19 June 2007 3:31am

I'm back from my hiatus!

I've been working on settling my father's estate and just generally getting my head back into something of a more normal state after his death. My brother and I have been handling it pretty well, but we're both still having issues with it.

By issues, I mean having trouble concentrating, sleep problems, weepy spells ... that kind of stuff. I'm told by a counselor that all we're experiencing is actually normal, and that we should worry if we WEREN'T experiencing it. That would mean we were in a serious case of denial. There is some comfort in knowing it is normal. It helps in the moments when I'm sure I'm cracking up.

Settling Dad's estate is proving more of a challenge than I thought it would. Years ago, when Dad told me I would be his executrix, I asked what I would have to do. Nothing much, he told me. Just get the will from the bank box and divide everything equally between my brother and I. Ha! If only it were that simple!

The government (local, state and federal) has to get in on the act and complicate everything, of course. Then there are the fools I have to deal with on occasion.

Like the lady at a doctor's office. I had called to get the final amount Dad owed their office, explaining he had passed away. She gave the canned "I'm sorry for your loss", and then told me she couldn't give me that information without his permission. I explained again that he had died and asked what paperwork she needed from me as the executrix. Again, she offered condolences, and again, she said I had to have his permission. My frustration level had started to climb by that point because I could tell she wasn't really listening, just giving canned responses. I told her that, if she paid for the gypsy, I would hold a seance so Dad could give her his permission. THAT finally got her attention.

Still, she has been one of the exceptions. In the main, everyone has been very helpful.

Anyway ... I'm back, and I'll start posting again.

A welcome back, you haven't missed a great deal around here, apart from the newly formed Tusconmike Appreciation Society! And some other stuff ;)
Hope life is settling down for you now and the worst is over, sorry the property issues are difficult tho :)

Welcome back, Donna. I cannot even begin to imagine, though the time is coming when I will have to deal with such matters.

As stupid as it sounds, the person in the doctors office is just trying to cover her butt in our legalistic society.

My parents solved the problem by not having family be the executrix. It is an attorney in the office where my youngest sister works. At least Donna, you got it done.

Welcome back, Pandab! Sounds like the lady in the doctor's office was on another planet but I like your response!
