Merry Christmas... yet again! by Katia on 6 January 2008 10:51pm

Yes folks, Merry Christmas, it's come to Russia now! Orthodox Christians celebrate today! And I have just unpacked the present Linda gave me a month ago, I promised not to look at it until Christmas which was not an easy task -

- and thank you VERY much Linda, it's a real treat and it's just adorable!

It's Michael Palin bio by Jonathan Margolis, who also wrote Cleese Encounters (which I found in an old book shop in Charing Cross also a month ago!), great pictures, and I am going to take it to Italy with me because I can't wait to start reading!

God bless you Linda, fondest wishes for the New Year (yes we are going to celebrate our "Old New Year" in a week, though it sounds quite ridiculous:)) and see you in 2008!

Going to have a drink now:)

P.S. yes I am still up though it's 20 min past midnight, because fireworks are at full blast outside! I wonder if I get some sleep at all tonight!

Yes, Merry Orthodox Christmas, Katia,. Although my girlfriend is of Russian decent, 2nd generation, I have never heard her or her family use that term. But she does celebrate by keeping her tree up longer and so forth. We, on the other hand, keep ours up and lit only through tonight--- Three Kings Day. I am always very sad de-decorating the tree even though it's good to get the house back to normal.

Merry Christmas, Katia, orthodox or unorthodox!

I'm leaving my tree up until I'm tired of it. I'm not tired of it yet. One year, it stayed up until February 23, because we were all sick and depressed and no one had the energy to get the ornament boxes out and drag the tree out to the back yard. Usually it goes down in mid to late January.

Thank you, thank you! Well at least we can leave our trees up till mid-Jan, and my flat has two trees this year, and also lots of flashing lights :) So I am back from Milan (which is arguably better than Napoli?..;)) on Thursday, to plug things in again immediately! See you soon XX

Merry Christmas from me too!
I think many Russians were celebrating it in Finland, or at least there were many of them in Rovaniemi last week so maybe they returned home for Christmas. There were special trains to take them to Rovaniemi and then back to Russia, which I think is a very good thing because our trains were filled with Finns anyway.

Merry Christmas Katia (sorry didn't see your post until today).

And I wish you a happy 2008 'from the future'!

A friend of ours in Turkey wished us "Happy New Year from the future" on our New Year's Eve - they are 2 hours ahead of us and so he had already celebrated the New Year!! He's bonkers hahaha

We are taking our tree etc down today - boo. I always think about the story of the little Christmas tree who was so proud to be the centre of attention and then was discarded like an old boot afterwards. Makes me sad.

Anne :-(
