Testament to Michael by RichB on 15 April 2003 10:15pm

The documentary Michael told us about entitled 'The Ladies Who Loved Matisse' is on tomorrow, 16th April. The interesting thing, that I think is testament to Michael's popularity and general TV greatness, is that the TV guide shows it as 'Michael Palin and The Ladies Who Loved Matisse'. They obviously thought that tagging Michael's name onto the programme title would increase the ratings, and rightly so.

You may have noticed that the programme WAS titled, 'Michael Palin and the Ladies Who Loved Matisse'. It made me smile, as it wasn't really about him, although he seemed to be on one of his travelling jaunts during the programme. Just an excuse to go off for a bit, methinks . . .

I saw the program lastnight. I'm not really into art so it didn't really "do it" for me but Michael certainly did!! Great to see him on the tv again.

I like michael and I like art and i love italy but to be honest I found the programme incredibly dull probably becaus the show was about to be frank two unknown irrelevant sisters, if the show had been about matisse then that might have been interesting but I just wasnt interested in the slightest about these two victorian american sisters who bought pictures. I really tried to like it and michael was very professional and likeable and engaging as ever but i personally think he needs to watch what he does next cos any more programmes like this and his once flourishing documentary/traveller career could be slowed down a little bit. I dont think sahara was the success people are making out and I feel this show was as close to boredom as you could get with michael on the telly. Now before you all fly off into one this is just my opinion and I would ask that you look at the programme objectively and make your comments accordingly dont forget we will always have monty pytheon ATWI80D P2P and FC
and thats one hell of a body of work

Hi Napoleon
That programme`s title - and therefore content - was not about Matisse, but the Cone sisters.
I do agree with you that the documentary was a bit slow in places, although of course it was great to see MP on the telly.
However, I`m not sure I can agree with your comments re. Sahara. That has been both a critical and commercial success not only in the UK but worldwide.
I think Michael will always have the ability to make excellent programmes, whether under the auspices of the BBC or his own production company.

Lou . . . are you Louize? Or are there two people Louise and Louize?

I'm with Lou about 'Sahara'. The BBC were after Michael to do another travel series because of the success of 'Sahara', so others could not have thought it boring. I did not find it boring in the least. I do admit the first episode was rushed and that would have been fixed if another one or two episodes had been added, but that was not Michael's fault. He wanted more. After reading the many comments about how rushed the first episode was from others, it has proved Michael was right.
