Travel is Getting Expensive! by tucsonmike on 10 June 2008 2:03pm

I was online and saw how expensive even in "off season" it is to fly to London.

What I am now finding (in the U.S. anyway), I use different travel modes for different cities from Tucson to:
Las Vegas-drive
San Antonio-fly
Los Angeles-train.

If this continues, vacations are going to mean bus trips into Mexico.

You bet, Mike. 2 friends of mine have managed - I suppose it's a package - to get 2 weeks in US (covering Chicago, Washington & Hawaii) - for £3000 for the two of them.

Seems a lot but they also seem to be getting quite a lot. I suppose the price of fuel is going to kick into cheap flights sooner rather than later.

Enjoy the bus trip...!

Aviation fuel is more expensive than regular fuel. So those prices will rise, no doubt.
And so it goes...

Flights from Scotland to long haul destinations now have huge fuel surcharges, I think the days of cheap air fares are well and truly over.
I thankfully don't have to drive a lot of miles in a year as petrol prices are through the roof here, as I said in another thread, I think oil prices are being talked up.

It's always been so expensive to fly anywhere from Australia, we're just sooo far away from the rest of the world.
Now, with the recent price hikes it is near impossible. We want to take Ava to London to see her grandma but we just can't do it :(

Same here, Kazz.....girls and I off to the UK.......almost thought I could manage it, UNTIL they added $670.00 PER PERSON (x3 = $2,010.00) in taxes/fuel surcharge etc....totally out of my reach....

I don't think many people will be going anywhere big for a while from the sound of it. Everybody you talk to is concerned and changing their lifestyles.

Rox, those fares are now scary ! I sometimes used to get in my head to visit my brother in Melbourne on a whim ( via the plastic ! ) but at those rates I'd have to leave my girls behind !
I'd never get to meet kazzzz and missy though as I know they would'nt trust me without my wee missus. ;)

Yes,Patty, changing lifestyles: I agree. I wish there could be some form of rationing - not by price - for air travel/carbon use.

I'm not convinced by offsetting, so far & I'd like some compulsion on the part of governments insread of voluntary action - but it's such a political hot potato.
For instance, road pricing (UK wide): our politicians have been saying, since 1964 'oh any scheme has to be at least 10 years off' and they're still saying it. Depressing.

(I appreciate those in other countries than UK will have a different take on this).
