Citizens Police Academy, Bomb Squad and SWAT. by tucsonmike on 21 November 2008 2:20am

We started with an officer from the Bomb Squad. I brought up the fact that in the U.K., the signs in the tube tell you what to do with an unattended package. Officer Pickler had traveled in the U.K. and said the U.K. is much better prepared to handle bomb threats than Americans are, even with 9/11.

The SWAT guys had some visiting snipers from Wales and had a field day making them train under desert conditions.

Wow, Mike. What different lives we lead!

It is what makes the world interesting. The SWAT guys make clear they DON'T want to kill the person they are after.

Many of their weapons are unpleasant if you get hit with them (the paintball pellet that shoots Cayenne pepper instead). The wooden peg they bounce off the ground that hits you in the knee.
We will meet the hostage negotiators in the last class.

The Bomb Squad officer told us, many of the "bombs" here in Tucson were brought here by veterans who retired here. The old man dies and someone calls and says "There is a box in storage saying danger explosives."

Ooh I'm ashamed, I never had a chance to finish "CSI Tuscon."

The authorities may be up to speed on bomb-attack preparation, Mike. The people aren't.

A couple of yars ago I was at the National Archives (old office. They had a practice-evacuation of the public, tearing them away from their family-history documents.

'I'll just finish checking this microfilm.'

'I won't be long with this census'.

Whaddya do with them?

Let 'em blow up? Linda?;-) I understand. Back in February, 1996, I was in the library where I worked, but off duty.
One of my regular customers found me at the catalog and said, "Mike there is a leak upstairs."
Since I was dressed in an old coat and well worn jeans I went to get the bucket. I arrived back with the bucket and the same customer greeted me with "it is more than a leak."
It sure was, it was now Niagara Falls. It was only -25 Celsius outside and one of the sprinklers burst. The water flowed down the stairs from the second floor and hit six book shelves.
The two reference librarians on duty just sat there. I called the police. The Fire Department also came. The Fire Chief asked, "Are those outlets in the floor?"
"Yes"
"Everyone is to leave...NOW!"
You walk gingerly when stepping on an outlet could be a bad move.
People still wanted to check books out. They wanted to know if they could come back in fifteen minutes (we were closed for two weeks).
I understand Linda, and didn't think people in the U.K. would be that oblivious.

I loved your story, Mike. Yes, the Greaqt British Public are unbelievably STUPID is the word, oblivious is far too polite!

And in libraries you saw 'em unguarded and stupid. And I think you still do. My friend has worked her way up through the local library, now runs many in the Borough. her staff for some years had - they called him Mirrorman - he turned up every Christmas, claassic dirty raincoat, small mirror in hand, to look up the (female) staff's skirts. He was quite clever about it, even the dirty raincoat used to be changed, byt always spotted eventually.

"Citizens on patrol, citizens on patrol!"

Your thread reminded me of Police Academy 4, Mike!
