Stephen Fry's Speech about America by mrsthing on 5 July 2009 7:00pm

It's a long read, but well worth the effort. Funny, thought-provoking, and very well-written. Happy Independence Day, America!

I read this on the day you posted it, mrsthing. It was well worth the time and gave me something to think about and consider in a very pleasant way.

Thanks for the post.

You're welcome! I can't get anybody over at Cleese's forum to read it, no matter how many times I bump it to the top of the forum list. :-( Glad you liked it. I thought it was great!

I loved the bits at the beginning about the "educational" movies with the stilted language. It made me laugh out loud! I remember having to watch them in grade school.

Will try and read it when I have the time - it's rather long!

What do you think about his belief that water will be the most important thing in the coming years?

I don't think it will be as huge an issue as he thinks. We've got different kinds of water problems here on the east coast than the west, but most of the areas around my town have had water bans for several years on and off.

We have very few water problems in New England. Droughts are rare and usually short. We've had only one water ban since I've lived here, and that was just a "don't water your lawn, don't wash your car" ban. We have a well, and it has never run dry. So I can't see it happening here, but I definitely can see it happening in the midwest and west, and especially on the west coast.
