Leeks by mrsteabag on 7 August 2009 8:38pm
Anyone out there ever grown them? I planted a few this year and don't know when to harvest them. Zucchini/courgettes, on the other hand, are less subtle in their charms. I've had two that needed to be registered as dangerous weapons.

Don't let your Zucchini take over the world! I've grown leek. In our climate, a little frost is said to sweeten their flavour and I've left them in the ground only harvesting when I needed to.

Did you plant seedlings in a hole in the soil? This can help produce more white, tender leek.

Well, I bought a pot of them from Home Depot and dug a hole and stuck them in green side up. We're still a ways away from our first frost, so will wait until then. I'll remember your advice about planting for next year. Thanks! :)
Will be picking the next zukes tomorrow.

Yeah, Fran, an old-time gardener friend told me how to plant them. Using a 1-1 1/2 inch dowel or stick, bore an eight-inch hole and drop the seedling in, (green side up!) leaving the hole to gradually fill in during watering.

I froze a bagfull last year and only planted six this year.

Hey Kazzzz, I know that you're a great cook, so what can you do with leeks ?
I like chicken and leek pie already, so be imaginative. :)
