Big earthquake in Chile by Ken Dunn on 27 February 2010 9:25am

There has been a mag. 8.8 earthquake in Chile centred near Talcahuano on the coast about 300km south west of Santiago. First reports suggest loss of life is low. A tsunami warning was issued for the western south American coast and places in the south Pacific Ocean.

The earth's belly is rumbling again.

Two big earthquakes in less than a month and a half! News just announced NY city has had the snowiest February in History! Ireland and England in a deep freeze! Then we found out yesterday that an Iceberg the size of Luxembourg broke off Antarctic yesterday.

There have been so many aftershocks of around mag. 5 that the IRIS seismic monitor for the area is just one big red blob.

Have heard this morning that Sydney is on a tsunami alert.

I am shocked that the death count is so low, too early to have hope I suppose.

I didn't give much credence to global warming as we have had ice ages about every 10000-15000 years.
Tectonic plate movement seems to be the disorder of the day, while I sit in my house in South-East England.
Polar flips are ridiculed and when I try to look them up they seem to be related to one day and sometimes to the long periods of time.
Polar flips please tell me?

So am I, considering the quake went for three minutes. That Pacific Disaster Centre image is amazing. No wonder we're on alert here. We've been told not to go near any beaches.
