Has anyone seen the new Shrek movie? by BethGoth17 on 11 July 2010 8:48pm

I saw it today with my sister (I had to drag her along!) It wasn't the best out of the tetralogy, the story was a bit weak/full of plotholes but there were a few good laughs. The best part of the film was "Fat Puss in Boots" and his little pink ribbon. He was identical to my cat who has put *ahem* a lot of weight on lately :P I would see it again (but not at the cinema :P)

So, has anyone seen it? What do you think?

Yes we saw it, I thought the same as you Beth.....silly plot and the concept was impossible for little kids to understand, plus Ava was scared of Rumplestiltskin. It wasn't the best in the series.

I agree with both you lovely ladies that Shrek has already outbluffed its franchise run and should now be abandoned.

However I am still much enjoying TOY STORY,ever the more so since a mate of mine keeps telling me that I bear a remarkable resemblance to Woody.

I guess it's a good thing that Shrek 5 has been cancelled. I want to see Toy Story 3 too!!

I spent nearly 40 years of my life working in animation. I really should have, at least out of professional curiosity, been able to get myself through to the end of a Shrek movie but I've always either found myself wandering away from the tv soon after one has started or shutting it off in disgust. Haven't been able to get through even one. The characters are ugly and stiff and totally unbelievable. "Suspension of disbelief" (which is absolutely crucial for getting involved in a movie) is impossible for me with the Shrek movies and most of their digital counterparts.

Yes, (and I know I'm being a dinosaur here), yes, you can see every hair blowing in the wind but there is no life or creativity in the fine motor movements of the characters that would make them come alive. The armature of the digital design makes that impossible currently. I'm sure that great animation artists in the digital domain will eventually emerge but we are a long, long way from that being able to happen technically. (Go watch the Disney classics - although I HATE their scripts! - to see what I mean.)

The toy characters in "Toy Story" and ESPECIALLY the robots in "Wall-E" work really great because they are mechanical characters and mechanical digital animation can bring them to wondrous life. The human characters in those films are unbelievable and, IMO, disgusting.

And don't get me started on "Avatar"! Rotoscoping, no matter how you tart it up with computer wizardry, is still an abomination.

End of my curmudgeonly rant....

Where is everybody? I had a horrible disabling virus take down my computer and have been away for three weeks. I expected to come back to hundreds of messages but there were only 81.

Still here, dear! I agree--I'm a huge fan of the vintage Warner Brothers' bits. I can't stand the new stuff for the same reasons, and also they seem so self serving.

On a related note, I taught creative writing to 13 y.o.'s (and lived). One of the funniest things any came up with was an essay arguing that Disney films cause children emotional damage. She's right--"Bambi," for example. :)

Well.....Ava watches The Jungle Book a LOT,knows all the songs, (especially likes singing 'The Bear Nesesames" haha).... she also loves Finding Nemo, which I adore.
I really liked Avatar, thought it was amazing and that was only in 2D.

Awww bless her!

Remember the fantabulous TV series Robin of Sherwood starring first Michael Praed and later Jason Connery in the early 1980s? It had a really haunting theme tune by Clannad 'Robin (the hooded Man).

Our daughter Genevieve used to go round the house singing 'Robin - The Hooligan' because she thought those were the words! She would've been about 9 I think.

:D
