Talk about Coincidence!! by Spursfan on 11 November 2010 8:50pm

Most of you will know we have property in Kusadasi Turkey. You have to have, by law, on top of your usual house insurance, special Earthquake Cover. This is for obvious reasons. More or less every year around October/November there are tremors, sometimes scary ones. Anyway, our earthquake insurance was due for renewal, so Zak sorted it out this evening via the internet with our insurance company there.

We have just heard via Facebook that there have been THREE earthquakes there tonight, the last one a big one.

Hopefully no damage or fatalities, but we're feeling quite pleased we renewed today!!

Wow! That could have been a sad tale Anne.

Yes, Loretto. As I said, they have small ones every year (or so it seems). People we know have said that people were in the streets after the last big one, and that it was really scary (I find even the small tremors quite worrying actually, especially if we're in our apartment on the 2nd floor!).

I can remember there being a really bad earthquake there a few years ago, where people lost their lives and buildings were lost. (Selfishly I was pleased I wasn't there at the time! But of course I was worried about our friends, who thankfully were ok). New buildings (including ours - I hope I'm right!) are earthquake-proofed.

My sister lived in Washington and bought a house a few years after Mt. St. Helens blew. She had to get a volcano rider on the policy. Very odd, coming from the Great Lakes.

Apparently they have had another large one (4.5) this morning, followed by a couple of small ones.

The epicentre of the large one the other day was Selcuk which is a town about 18 km away (11 miles or so) and is where Epheseus is situated. It was 4.9 I believe, which I suppose is small compared to some earthquakes but believe me it's still scary when you are in the middle of it!

Someone told us their ceiling was moving this morning, and another (Scottish) friend who is lucky enough to have an apartment in town for winter AND a villa by the sea for summer, is moving with her partner back to the villa as it is easier to get out of than going down 2 flights of steps!!

We are hoping to move to Turkey permanently when our present animals pass on (not looking forward to losing them of course). The earthquake situation is the only 'fly in the ointment' for me !!

You're waiting for the wee devil dog to die ?
Seriously, I'll take him and won't ever kick his arse. I love dogs Anne even though I haven't owned one in years. More importantly, dogs and babies love me. Not a brain between them . :)

Anyway Anne, since you're such an Engerlander, why would you want to leave that dump ?

Or is that a leading question ?

Even though I know you are trying to wind me up, I'm going to answer you.

We're not 'waiting' for that awful day - we dread it. We were both saying how wonderful it would be if he was 6 weeks old not 6 years - though that's not to say we love him any less than when he was a pup, just that we'd have those 6 wonderful years again. Average life expectancy for a Staffie is just 10 years, though of course that is average and we've met owners with Staffies much older, hope he lives forever really!!

Also Enger-land is NOT a dump, it is beautiful and also you can flush loo paper down the loo (you can't in Turkey - pipes too narrow!!)!!!

:D

However, thanks to this government, our standard of living will be far far higher in Turkey than it would be at home.

The world uses Engerland as a dumping ground for it's waifs and strays. So you're moving to Turkey ? Sweet revenge. :)

Gawd, there must be large diameter loo pipes in Engerland.
