Statistics, da** statistics and just plain lies by Lounge Trekker on 27 January 2011 5:04am

Have you seen this? http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php

It is a compilation of statistics that can use up hours of your time. I have seen no way of determining the veracity of this information, but it is fun to look at. I did a scatterplot of soft drink consumption per capita vs teen pregnancy:

Or, how about: Financial satisfaction vs municipal waste generation?

http://www.nationmaster.com/plot/lif_fin_sat/env_mun_was_gen/flag

or, financial satisfaction vs amphetamine use:

Is that a ridiculous waste of time or a way into the boardroom for a fast-talkin' marketing maniac?

This post oughta be sanctioned by the Onion News.

Exactly Pete, the Onion News Network probably does use it already. I'm going to have a go with it....hold on.

I'd believe it; take a look at who is top of the pops on this one, and I think I know why.

It is actually a useful statistical tool, but as with any statistics, only as good as the source. I see a few inconsistencies in the availability of stats that I would expect to see, and I didn't really look to poke holes in it.

I just thought some outrageous correlations would give me a laugh!
