Japanese earthquake 8.9 by Lounge Trekker on 11 March 2011 7:20am
An 8.9 earthquake has taken place 150 km east of Honshu, Japan. A tsunami warning has been issued. CNN predicts the tsunami makes landfall in the Phillipines at 9:55 GMT.

If you are on the western shore of the Pacific, get to high ground now. Not knowing anyone in the Phillipines, I called my ISP tech support knowing these people are in Manilla, and warned them about the tsunami warning. It was the first they heard about it. I hope for the best for everyone.

I'm watching the live footage the tsunami that was triggered by the earthquake, it is just absolutely amazing footage. It's terrifying watching the water sweep across roads and through villages.

We just heard the news here at 6:30 am
The footage shows water just flushing across farmland, debris of all sorts being tossed about like matchsticks. Tsunami warnings for western coast of USA and Hawaii. I have a first cousin living in Hawaii. Hope he and his wife are alright!

It's dreadful. December 2004 all over again.

This is the same link I gave about a year or so ago, look at the red circles around Japan

And this link gives the details of each aftershock

So far 31 people are dead the news said here.

Just watched this video, very upsetting. If you watch until the end, at the bottom of the left hand side of the screen a white car turns in the road and tries to outrun the water. What was going through that person's mind, poor thing. The car is at 2:30.

I was in front of the TV as this was reported about 10 last night. Yeah, amazing from here and horrifying in Japan.

Big one.

Some damage here in California but it wasn't as bad as was feared. I called my cousin who lives on the coast this morning an hour before the first wave was supposed to hit and she had slept through all the warnings. Fortunately, the surge wasn't that great in Mendocino.

Crescent City is another matter. Docks and many boats in the harbor there were destroyed. Twenty million dollars of damage and they're still counting and finding more boats at the bottom of the harbor. And four extremely stupid photographers who wanted to film the tsunami were washed out to sea. Rescuers managed to save only three of them.

The cat rescue I foster kittens for is located in Crescent City and the facility where the cats are housed in within the evacuation area so the woman who runs the rescue hasn't been allowed in to check on them. Fortunately, there wasn't any damage that far inland so I'm sure the cats are OK (but probably really, really hungry.) The evacuation order is supposed to be lifted in an hour or two.

I just can't comprehend what an 8.9 earthquake would be like. The biggest one I ever went through was the Northridge one which toppled houses and flattened freeways in Los Angeles. The one in Japan yesterday was 60 times more powerful than that (and 30 times more powerful than the famous one in San Francisco in 1906.)

And now an explosion at a nuclear reactor. But the Japanese stock exchange will be trading as normal on Monday!
