Geography Field Trips by David Witt on 9 July 2012 7:10pm

Your reported comments about the importance of field trips for pupils are appreciated by this retired primary teacher/headteacher. When I was training in the early 70s lots of schools ran field trips, either days out or residential, something that I organised almost every year of my 30 year career. The issue is not that schools don't want to do this, but many have been put off by over restrictive health and safety requirements, cost, and the demands of a prescriptive curriculum and Ofsted. Do something about all these things and I'm sure you'd see a change.

Whose "reported comments" are you referring to David? I agree with most of your remarks but you appeared out of nowhere and have made references to no one in particular.

Sorry Johnny, I'm new to this game. Reported comments by M. Palin, making a speech this week. I was under the impression that the Chatter Box involved the man himself, hence the presumption.

Welcome David. I read your post and though not in the UK, I am in the US, I think the public schools here have cut back on many educationally enriching programs. Field trips still happen but due to sex scandals, drug use and underage drinking school administrators and parents are in over protective modes.

However depending on what school district you are in, your field trip could be local or international.

One of the kids who works on Sundays in the summer for my husband went to Machu Picchu and the Galapogas for his senior trip, two years ago. He is from a richer school district and I believe that the trip was not for all seniors, his Mom went with him, and why wouldn't she? Sounds like a ni e trip to me! All the education budgets here in the US are in trouble right now though.
