Who knows on the energy issue, but for all the fears people currently have about the re-emergence of a unified Islamic Caliphate in the Middle East and North Africa due to the rise of Clerics in the new politics of the region after the 'Spring', the result is probably going to be the complete opposite as they are currently more divided now than for a long time.

Endless factions, Sects and Ethnic groups all in domestic squabble. Divide and Rule. The closest the Arab world in particular came to unity since the fall of the Ottoman Empire was under the Pan Arab Secularism of the Nasser-Gaddafi-Hafez Assad axis. Even then, still plenty of squabbling about who was going to be 'supreme leader' of it all, which prevented it truly forming.

The 'ruling for decades' Secular strongmen of the region kept a lid on all these divisions, but now the lid is off. Israel 'appears' to be under great threat due to this, and although I do believe that is watching events very very very closely indeed (hence the strike yesterday upon a vehicle in Syria that was heading over to Lebanon I believe), I would agree that in actual fact all this division could give them breathing room. After all, if your enemies are all arguing amongst themselves then they're not united against you. My 'few' cents, anyway.

However, Israel appears to have got quite a bum smack today from the UN over the settlements.

Godfather, it is why I enjoyed the book, Jews and Power. Throughout most of Post-Roman history, being Jewish was like applying for a job. You had to convince the ruler to let you in AND protect you. Jews aren't the only ones. Read Thomas Sowell, the Stanford economist. There are middlemen people like that worldwide. (The Ibo in Nigeria, Chinese in Southeast Asia). Theodore Herzl, when he created Zionism, thought, when Jews had their own state, they would be respected and Anti-Semitism would go away. Modern Israel proved him wrong.
