Anne is there atm. I heard that there was serious damage to a tank which struck her in Taksim Square. ;)

Cheeky b****r!

I have commented a little on this on another string (Ken's Indian railways).

The protests about building on parks in Istanbul etc. are just the tip of the iceberg.

Basically all agree (or majority I should say) that the PM has to go. He has introduced ridiculous laws
and is trying to take Turkey backwards rather than forwards. Not sure of all the details but they are now not allowed to drink in the street (i.e. out of their houses, at bars etc.) between certain hours in the day (ok, they are Muslim, but most enjoy a tipple, especially of their (bizarrely considering they are Muslim) national drink Raki, similar to Ouzo).

If you are caught driving under the influence of drugs (not sure if this includes alcohol) and admit the offence, you are fined 5,000 Turkish lira and banned for 5 years; if you deny it, you are fined 2,000 TL and banned for 2 years - the figures may be slightly wrong as I have forgotten but the end result is the same - guess which most would do???

There is a chain of supermarkets called BIM in Turkey, pretty similar to our Kwiksave, there are at least 4 in the town we have our apartment in, they are owned by the PM and are 'dry'. He recently gave the whole lot to his son for his birthday!

Obviously there is more to it than all this, but it gives you an idea. There will be an election next year and he is unlikely to get back in, from what we are led to believe.
