Has anyone seen the video "Michael Palin's Great Railway Journey" released in 1993? What's it like?

I have no idea, but I've just ordered it from Amazon anyway! Such is the strength of the man and his product!

Heh amordue, i'm surprised you have to ask what 'Great Railway Journey' is like 'cos:
a) It has Michael Palin in it
b) He's travelling!

Actually Michael did two train journeys, one back in 1980 up to Scotland (Confessions of a train spotter) and Derry to Kerry (1993). The Scotland trip is pretty dated now, but for the most part its interesting nonetheless. Personally Id like to see a section on the site about those trips too. They were much smaller than the later trips, and also were just one offs rather than series. Both shows have been deleted by the BBC now, though are available on ebay. Confessions is mostly available down under in Aus. Would be nice to see them released on DVD too, but I doubt theyll appear if Hemingway isnt likely to make it either.

Has Michael or the web site ever made any mention as to why neither of his railway journeys are represented here at his site? I am an ardent rail fan who very much enjoyed both journeys, but was too young to purchase them when available on the open market. If anyone has an email address to which I could plead my case directly to Mr. Palin, it would be greatly appreciated! peace...

I bought the 6 part series some time ago as a boxed set. MP is only on 1 of them, the section from Derry to Kerry. The other 5 "Great Railway Journeys" have 5 other presenters. I assume the BBC must retain full marketing rights to the entire project.

I recently tracked down Derry to Kerry on video at www.blackstar.co.uk they still have copies of it, even though the BBC deleted it. I got it for £8-99 including free postage to the UK from Belfast. Amazon.com in the US still have it available as well, I think.
I second your vote for adding the train section to this site. Its definitely something worth asking him at a book signing too.
The books of both "Great Railway Journeys" series are available, though I picked them up second hand. "Confessions of a train spotter" is in "Great Railway Journeys of the World" and "Derry to Kerry" is in "Great Railway Journeys". I foolishly hadnt realised that these were two separate books until recently. :-(

Thanks for the info that Palin has written about both of his train trips. But, please, could you provide the publisher/ page count/ publication date/ ISBN number of "Great Railway Journeys of the World"? I have found an on-line site that has several books with the same title. I have safely removed the one released in 1964 from contention.
Re: Great Railway Journey by julwis on 6 April 2004 11:22pm
The editions I have of the two books are
"Great Railway Journeys of the World" Sphere 1982 ISBN 0 7221 5244 2 (192 pages) (Chap 6: Confessions of a train spotter pp 143-167) (I understand this was also published in 1981 by another publisher but I dont have details of that edition, perhaps BBC)
"Great Railway Journeys" Penguin/BBC 1995 ISBN 0 1402 4743 2 (214 pages) (Chap 5: Derry to Kerry pp 145-174)
Hope this helps
