Meeting Michael, The Sequel, "I didn't expect the palinite Inquisition!" 2003 by Diamond on 13 December 2003 3:02pm

Palinites united together in London to meet Michael Palin on Thursday 11th December 2003

Well, one down and another one to go, Thomas stayed with Sophie-Lou and I for dinner and the journey to High St, Kensington for our next adventure, you will have to read the thread
“Michael, the Sequel, I didn’t expect the Palinite Inquisition” to find out what exciting things happened!!!

Here we are again, folks!! Palinites on the move to the second book signing of the day, and this time it was Waterstones in Kensington. We arrived at about 4.20pm for the 5pm start and this time we were going to be in the front of the queue, and guess who was first – yep Sophie-Lou, then Thomas and myself, Sahara paperbacks were again 3 for the price of 2, so we combined finances (I hope I sell my tent!!) and bought a copy for each of us, Thomas also found other Michael paperbacks for his collection – well done Thomas, how many books did you get him to sign in one day?? I must point out that there was a limit in both shops of 3 books per customer and the lady who was there to help Michael, strictly adhered to this limit! So we did a few crafty manoeuvres to help Thomas out, well palinites are there to help each other!

All too soon Michael appeared out of nowhere, and smiled and laughed and said, as soon as he saw us three, “Oh No, not you again!” Photos again with Michael followed and as he was at the beginning of the book signing, to me appeared more relaxed and not under so much pressure. I gave him my book to sing and without asking my name Michael looked at me and said “one N or two” – wow he remembered me! – “One N please!”. This time as Michael was on the ground floor and the book shop was a lot smaller, we were not allowed to stay while he signed other books but we were rewarded with a pleasant hour in the Starbucks coffee shop next door – where Thomas had a very, very hot cup of coffee! The queue for Michael snaked out of the front door and round the corner in to the street, and again there were not as many people as last year.

While we were waiting for Michael to appear, I very kindly asked the very friendly shop assistant if by any chance there was a spare poster for my fellow palinites to take home as a souvenir of their day – especially as they had travelled so far to see Michael. Well, Sophie-Lou are you going to tell your fellow palinites what Michael wrote on the very long poster you were rewarded with?? Please do as it was a very long message!! We did have to wait until the very end of the book singing for this reward to our palinite loyalty and there was only one poster signed (sorry Thomas but I will try for you nest time round) which had its rewards. As we were waiting in the shop for Michael to finish signing the last few books and go upstairs to sign the poster, Michael noticed by chance a photographer friend of his, to whom he had a long conversation, I hovered very close, just to say thank you to Michael when he had finished speaking and found out that Michael has two more episodes to film of Himalayas, that he has only been home for ten days and is supposed to be writing the book, but had been asked to do book signings.

Michael left the store at about 7.30pm in a London Black Taxi cab (luxury!)- no chauffeur driven limo for our Michael !!

All in all, a very special day with great company, and the one thing I very much appreciated was the support of my fellow palinites – we made a great team!!!

What an excellent account of our day Lyn! Very good! I don't think Michael expected the Palinite Inquisition, in fact I think we scared him!! (STALKERS!!!) lol ;)

On the poster than Lyn very kindly got me, it says:

Meet Michael Palin ho will be signing copies of Sahara..

then Michael wrote:

Thankyou Waterstones for a wonderful afternoon! See you again. And then his signiture!

The huge poster is stuck on the back of my bedroom door and i am making a shrine to the day i met Michael by sticking all the photos around the poster............. (yes i know i am obsessive....but i don't care.....)

It was the best day ever, thanks to Thomas and Lyn for such a wonderful day, it wouldn't have been the same without both of you!!!!

thanks sophie-lou - its surprising what you can get at a book signing if you ask nicely - the harder you work the luckier you will get - it was worth the wait wasnt it!!

Yes Lyn I noticed that! Do you remember he told you off because you asked him to look at the camera when he was signing my book! He said:

"Now hold on, I can't do two things at once!" Then he looked up and smiled!

Oooo, jealous. ;O)

Why does it always seem like Michael is book-signing over in the UK but he rarely ventures over to the US? I'm still sour over missing the one time I could have seen him...stoopid astronomy class.

SIGH.
