Britain's Greatest Sitcom...a month too late, but have a look anyway by Palinite14 on 22 April 2004 2:03pm

You remember the BBC's latest celebrity-voting-archive-public-interest-nostalgia show, Britain's Favourite Sitcom, which finished up a few weeks ago? I wasn't there when it finished and so got the results three weeks later; what does everyone think of the final results? Is anyone shocked by the fact that their favourite didn't win? Or does anyone have any comments on any of the featured shows?

By the way, the final results were as follows:

1)Only Fools And Horses (cheer!)
2)Blackadder
3)The Vicar Of Dibley
4)Fawlty Towers
5)Yes Minister
6)Dad's Army
7)Porridge
8)Open All Hours
9)The Good Life
10)One Foot In The Grave

My favourite is Only Fools And Horses so I was very happy that it had won. I was surprised that Dad's Army was lower than Yes Minister and that One Foot In The Grave wasn't any higher. Also I thought that Fawlty Towers had a better chance than Blackadder. Anybody got an opinion?

Yeah I was annoyed that Fawlty Towers, a classic comedy was beaten by the vicar of Dibley! What the hell's going on there? I knew Only Fools would win from the start though. It's something the whole nation loves. Dad's army should've been higher too!

Are any of these available on DVD? My Brit sister-in-law would be very interested. Also, and this is just me wondering, is the actress who played Mrs. Slocum on "Are You Being Served?" really a cultural icon or not? She being presented that way right now on the PBS for fund raising purposes. She's hilarious.

Mollie Sugden - not a cultural icon.

These are probably my top 5

1 - Blackadder (simply the best)
2 - Fawlty Towers (Que?)
3 - Bottom (hilarious)
4 - Father Ted (FECK!....DRINK)
5 - Red Dwarf (the early seasons)

Our Mollie NOT a cultural icon Gwen!!!! :^} :^}

On a strictly personal note, Ms Sugden has been been an inspiration to me for many years, especially on the fashion and hair styling front.

I never really feel fully dressed until I have back combed my hair up into a blue rinsed(or sometimes violet toned) buffont.

As for loving cats (we have three) that can also be traced back to Mrs Slocum's dear little mog, her pussy...........

Oh, I love that show too. Mrs. SLocum is a gem as are the other cast memebers, but she is always funny.

In the USA, we consider, As Time Goes By (or Just Two People)a British sitcom. Thats my favorite and AYBS is second.
