Mexico.... by Manchester Fella on 19 June 2004 1:47am

Forget Cancun, what has playa del carmen got to offer ???, also while I'm there in August where can I swim with free dolphins rather than those caught when young to supply the tourist trade ?

I cant answer your question, because i've not been there. But my parents will be going to the Yucatan region later in the year. If you're into Mayan history/temples and jungles, that would be fascinating for you. Depends what kind of thing you're after really.

Hi there,

My husband and I just got back from a 4-day weekend in Playa del Carmen. We had a great time.

Our first night there we went to a very cool restaurant called Alux (pronounced "all-ooosh"). The restaurant and bar are underground, inside a limestone cave. The stalactities and stalagmites were lit up with colored lights. The ambiance was incredible. They are open from 7 pm until 2 am, and entertainment (belly dancer followed by a band) starts around 9. It is a short cab ride from the center of town.

We also really enjoyed the food at Xlapac. It's right on the main pedestrian street in Playa (5th Avenue).

If you are into Mayan ruins, Chichen Itza and Tulum are great destinations. Chichen Itza is several hours away from Playa del Carmen, so we booked a day excursion there by bus. Tulum is closer, though, and right off the main highway.

You can take a bus there from Playa del Carmen for around 32 (US $3.20) pesos one way. Another good alternative is the collectivo (shared taxi). These are white vans with a colored stripe that say "collectivo" on the side. You simply flag them down from the side of the highway, and they will stop and give you a lift. It is really cheap. We went from the Xel Ha ruins back to Playa del Carmen for 20 pesos (US $2) apiece.

Bring a bathing suit wherever you go, because there are plenty of opportunities to swim. Obviously, if you go somewehere on the coast, you can swim in the Caribbean. But even inland destinations on the way to Chichen Itza offer swimming, sometimes in crystal clear sinkholes known as cenotes.

Beware of time share salespeople. Some friends of ours unknowingly got roped into a 4 hour sales pitch. These are plentiful in Playa del Carmen, but we managed to avoid them, as we knew about their tactics in advance.

Hope you have a great trip!

Steph
