Stupid idea for a cycling holiday, anyone want to come?:) by martin-eng on 4 July 2004 11:56pm

A small group of us are thinking of trying a cycle tour of northern europe. The rough idea is to catch a ferry from Newcastle to Bergen then cycle to Oslo and stockholm then a ferry to Helsinki ,after that cycle to St Petersburg,Tallin,Riga, then back through Lithuania into Poland,Germany, maybe Copenhagen ,then finally bach to Rotterdam and a ferry back to the uk.Its about 2500-3000 miles and would probably take 3 months.
Does anyone know anything about camping in these countries?or have touring experiance or even just fancy coming along ? we are thinking of june 2005 and are putting out feelers to see how feasable it is.Any information ,help or encouragement would be most welcome:)

Martin

Griff Rhys-Jones wrote a book called 'To The Baltic With Bob', which is sub-titled 'An Epic Misadventure'. He goes from the Thames estuary to Holland and through the Keil Canal to circumnavigate the countries with Baltic coastlines, some of which you mention. It may be worth a read but is more from a sailing aspect.

How about a naked cycling bananza through scandinavia? That would turn some heads :)

Well i have actually read the book you mentioned,it was one of the reasons i thought of going to that part of the world. That and it seemed the best way of making a round trip so we wouldnt have to cover the same place twice.
As for the naked cycling bananza,im saving that for the next trip, south america in the nude!!

Hi Martin!

I'd be glad to offer assistance for the Finnish aspects of your trip. From Helsinki to the Russian border is only a couple of hundred kilometres. If you wanted to see a bit more of Finland you could take the ferry from Stockholm to Turku (south-west coast) instead of Helsinki. This would pretty much double your time/distance in Finland.

General info on camping in Finland can be found here:

More specifically, the following site gives info about the biggest and best (allegedly) campsite in Helsinki. (Actually, it's quite close to where I live):

For another cycling adventure, try "The Trail to Titicaca" by Rupert Atlee. Three men set out to cycle 6500 miles up the Andes!!
