inspired to worldtrip with 2 young kids by caroline kimman on 9 July 2004 9:33pm

My husband and I were inspired by "Around the world in 80 days" to go ourselves around the world in 1993.
Unfortunately we got "distracted" and we never did go travelling.
Now, at the end of July 2004 we will travel around the world in 365 days with our two children, aged 7 and 9.

My parents took my brother and me abroad for the first time when we were 13 and 10. People said we might be too young to appreciate it, but I remember everything.
What kind of itenerary have you got, and how long would you stay in one place at a time? Probably you won't be on the go for 365 days. When I was 10, I liked seeing the places I'd heard about, but I got sick of the journeying part, spending 5 hours at a stretch in the backseat of a compact rental car. I only mutinied (my parent's word) once in the course of a month, but it reminded them that, from what an adult sees as "travel", a kid might see as "being pulled around". -David

Congratulations,Caroline. Yeah,365 days sounds more laid back than 80 to me. Should be good. I agree that 80 days is very inspiring. There is something about that series that remains unique. I think it's the wonder of Michael as he sets off. He's an old hand now,and the series are more polished and more "Alan Wicker" like in their documentary style. With 80 days, you really feel like you're with him on his first trip. It really inspires people to get on a boat and hear the lapping of the waves against the side of the boat at sunset.......or the clanging and fumes of the engine.

Godfather, unlike you I haven`t travelled very much at all - only 3 months in America as a teenager and several hols in Europe.
You wrote "fumes of the engine" - all that spent diesel. Yep! The smell of that - from whatever vehicle - reminds me of my small travels.
