Switzerland- The time of my life! by Sophie-Louise on 1 August 2004 7:52pm

Hi all!

I went to Switzerland from the 9th-18th July for an AS level Geography Fieldtrip to study glaciation and urban studies in Saas Fee, Saas Grund, Sion and Zermatt.

Days one and two were spent travelling by coach and ferry down the town of Saas Grund in the South of the country. The whole coach enjoyed watching Shrek on the way from Lincoln to Dover and sang along to most of the songs! After a rather rough crossing to Calais, many got back on the coach feeling rather ill and we settled down to watch Monty Python And The Holy Grail before trying to get some sleep!

We arrived in Switzerland the next morning and had breakfast, it took us a further 6 hours to drive around Lake Geneva and through the alps to reach our hotel in Saas Grund.

The next day we went up the Langfluh Glacier above Saas Fee. We are all very lazy people so we caught the cable car up and walked down! Walking down was quite tough as the snow was quite thick and we were slipping and sliding around. At one point I trod in the wrong place and ended up with snow up to my chin almost!

On Wednesday we went to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn where we had loads of photos taken standing in front of it! We then walked down into Zermatt to study planning and the future of the town, which we later did a presentation on to the rest of the group and my group won! (WOO HOO). Some of us managed to sneak into one of the 5 star hotels in the Zermatt and steal some of their first class toilet paper! Tee hee. We also tried out the local Mac Donalds which charged us £7 for a Big Mac Meal (*shudder*).

On Thursday we went to see the Aletsch Glacier (the largest in Europe) and walked back to the bottom of the valley, stopping off for ice cream and cold drinks on the way. Many were sunburnt but it was a lovely day.

Friday was the ‘water day’ where we trundled back to the outwash plain in Saas Fee to take river velocity measurements at different times of the day. This was very hard by the end of the day as the river was flowing much faster and was much deeper. I fell over in the water but managed to save the school’s flow meter which was apparently very expensive!

On Saturday we went to the town of Sion which is apparently the sunniest place in Europe. We were all given different locations of the town to do pedestrian and traffic counts and environmental scores of buildings. We also had to interview pedestrians in French about the town but this proved tough when nobody understood the answers they were giving us!

On the last day we got a cable car from Saas Grund to see the Hohsaas Glacier. We walked back down through the snow and got very sunburnt yet again! Half way down we stopped for a BBQ in a tiny village and there was the chance to go for a swim in a glacial meltwater lake which was only just above freezing! I took one deep breath and jumped right in. I have to say that it was the most uncomfortable experience of my life but it had to be done just to tell all you masochists out there! In the evening it was time to pack and endure the gruelling 24 hour coach journey back to Lincoln.

It was the best experience of my life, not only did I learn so much about the country and it’s natural and human Geography but also I had the time of my life and made many new friends with the students from the other college whom we travelled with. Switzerland is such a beautiful and fascinating country. Anyone else who has stories of their travels there please do share them in this thread!

Happy travels everyone.

Beautiful scenery in the photos. Looks fantastic. I must try and get there someday. Glad you had a good trip. Sounds like you're addicted to travel now. It is your destiny. It is inevitable!!!

I think it's time to arrange a celebrity death match between Sophie-Lou and Basil. Cameras can be used, aswell as telephoto lenses. But sharp edged film reel is a no no for this defining contest.
