Long Way Round - Ewan McGregor by Saintwatty on 18 November 2004 5:17pm

Is anyone else watching this series which is currently being screened on Sky One.

It really is quite good, the story of Ewan Mcgregor and his mate Charley Boorman's adventure where they attempt to motorcycle from London to New York. McGregor is in my top 5 blokes and really comes across as being down to earth and up for a laugh.

The pair of them find theirselves in some scrapes along the way and are currently away to take on the road of bones in siberia, enthralling stuff.

Anybody share my enthusiasm for this series?

..watching here in the US...tonights episode is apparently biking thru Mongolia and having been there I am taping this one for future reference, especially for the testicle soup meal! No one ever offered that to me, thank goodness! Good series...

Sounds like a great series, because Ewan is a very enthusiastic guy about these kind of things. I saw him in an Episode of "Ray Mears Survival" when they went to Peru. He was willing to learn and kept a comedy face on it all throughout all the hardships. So i should imagine he must be fun in this other series you mention. I dont have Sky One, so i guess it might be shown on terrestrial TV later this year?

McGregor hails from the town of Crieff which is about 18 miles west of where i live in Perth. He has done alot for the local community and is very highly thought of.

To see him come across as being so down to earth and up for doing anything, especially given his status, is extraordinly refreshing :)

I havent seen it yet but Ive read the book. I was a little disappointed/annoyed to begin with, mostly with the distrust that Ewan (especially) held for anyone they met, and also with the early antics of the producer, however as the book continued it was really encouraging to read as he opened up more to the locals and was genuinely moved by the journey.
OK some of the situations they found themselves in warranted caution, but as Ewan said, even he felt his British waryness of foreigners was unwarranted ultimately and his changes throughout the journey became one of the most interesting parts for me.
It also made me realise how much more open Michael is on his journeys, though I guess that point is arguable, since Michaels been travelling longer and Ewan/Charleys trip was much smaller in terms of crew and preparation.
I guess the point about Ewans waryness of people is highlighted in the stretch across North America.
Im still really envious of his trip, and Im looking forward to getting the DVD in the UK on December 6th!
Hope these guys get to do a follow up!

I've been watching this series. Think it's excellent. Ewan and Charlie seem so down to earth. They have had some adventures on this trip. Would love to do something like that. I hope they do another in the future too. Have bought book as well.

Love this series. Also it's great to see Charley and Ewan's jaw dropping amazement as the World unfolds infront of them. This series has a great spirit about it, and makes you have a yearning to buy a BMW and take off. Have discussed already on another thread about the beauty of using small portable cameras to shoot Travel Docs. They give the viewer more of a feel of being there with the adventurer. Also please remember that for most part it was only Charley,Ewan, and the third biker Claudio (Extra cameraman). They have every right to feel vunerable in such strange places. It would be like one of us taking 2 friends camping around Southern Russia and Mongolia, you will sometimes feel edgy. Although as proven by this series, you soon overcome your fears and prejudices, that's the beauty of travel. Will say I'm enjoying this series more than Himalayer, as it's back to basics and less glossy than MP's recent effort.
There is a DVD being released of LWR in December.
It is repeated on Sky Travel on Wednesdays and I think Sundays.

Well it just seemed to me reading the book that they were being overly British. Considering the places Ewans been I kind of expected him to be a little more open minded. He does get over it though which is a good thing! Anyway.......... its on DVD today and Im off to get my copy!
