Michael's next destination by bazzo on 7 December 2004 11:54am

I think Michael deserves somewhere less strenuous after all that climbing in Himalaya. What about a journey through the countries surrounding the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea starting in Turkey, Greece moving through Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine (Crimea etc.) and into Russia - then the republics of the Caucasus etc? Relatively little is known about many of these countries in the West, though it is increasingly an important strategic area. I'm sure it would make compelling viewing.

As an alternative, I know that Russia was featured in Full Circle and Pole to Pole but there is so much we haven't seen - e.g. inland Siberia - Lake Baikal etc. - a fascinating land with lots of history and culture as touched on in the BBC 4 series 'All the Russias'. It would be good to see Michael go there.

What do others think?

Those are great ideas!

I think he could explore more of Australia and New Zealand, too... That would be fun.

I always thought a series of tours through all the "holy cities" would be neat. We already know from "80 Days" that MP's not allowed in Mecca...

Here's my ill attempt at comedy writing, but I haven't had my coffee yet:

"Blighted and Unsanitary Former Foundry Towns of the Central Standard Time Zone with Michael Palin"

Huh? Huh? Wadya think?!

Interesting idea Bazzo, I think more than being a general series about that area (which is what people are always complaining about now) why not make it a series aiming to visit every country of the former Soviet Union, maybe aiming to end up in Moscow or St. Petersburg? Sounds like a good choice to me, and it doesnt involve climbing too many mountains (Kyrgystan (apologies for spelling!) is an exception!).
