The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Chinggis/Genghis/Ghengis Khan by Katie J on 26 April 2005 12:58pm
I saw a great show on Chinggis/Genghis/Ghengis Khan last night ... it showed his rise to power (from being Temujin to 'King' of all the Mongols) and his tactical genius (and blood thirsty ambition!!) that led to him conquering vast regions of the world (central Asia, Northern China and eastern Persia). Plus they had the funniest little ponies that they trotted along on...wicked!

Was pretty gruesome in parts...what with his blood brother boiling his prisoners alive...nice!

Have any of you guys been to that part of the world? The rolling plains (the 'steppes' I think) are beautiful?

(there's a fab book called, 'The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody', that has such a funny bit about G.K. in it! It's a great read).

Missed it I'm afraid as 'Going to Extremes' on Channel 4 was on at the same time (and my vid recordor is not working presently) and I have been watching the latter over the last few episodes. I was in Mongolia a few years back and can confirm the wild beauty of that part of the world. Huge skies and endless horizons!

I saw that too, it was great! Though I did think it rushed things a little too much at the end, couldnt they have made it into 2 parts and focussed longer on his conquests, rather than just announcing that one of his envoys had been beheaded in Persia and before you could say Genghis Khan, hed invaded Hungary!
Check out Long Way Round for more travels in Mongolia, Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman rode across Mongolia on bikes last year, and made a very cool series about it!
