jobs and taxes by kristinekm on 21 June 2005 11:58pm

Lately I have been searching for a summer job and I got a cleaning job which I can keep when I continue university after the holiday.

In my search I checked up on other countries and got rather chocked by how little money you would get paid for the same kind of job in the UK. Then I remembered you pay a different percent in tax. So my question is how much money will an unskilled worker get for a cleaning job being 21 in the UK?
I will be paid 9.99 GBP pr. hour and pay 39% back in low-income tax.

Hope this helps:

The Government has announced an increase to the National Minimum Wage rates, which will take place on 1 October 2004.

Main (adult) rate for workers aged 22 and over
£4.85 per hour (an increase from £4.50 an hour)

Development rate for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
£4.10 per hour (an increase from £3.80 an hour)

As for tax, all I can tell you is that I'm earning not much over minimum wage and the tax is about 15-20% However, you may also have to pay National Insurance contributions (although as a non-UK national, you may not). Also worth considering is the personal allowance of £4895. Any earnings up to that amount are tax-free.

Try looking at www.hmrc.gov.uk

Thanks for your help alisonh! Do you mean 1 October 2005? ;)
There isn't that big a diference then. I get paid twice as much but I also have to pay twice as much back in taxes.

No, it is meant to read 1 October 2004. I had this information from the website saved (from when someone sent it to me) and I didn't bother to change to tense. Sorry.
