Live8 on the BBC by perfectbitch on 2 July 2005 11:47am

I am very disappointed to discover that the only coverage of the concert of African artists in Cornwall is a small amount of radio time. With all the channels that the beeb has to play with, I would have thought that a slot could have been found for trannsmission. So much for their proud claims of "Africa on the BBC"

Yes it is rather disappointing and despite the claims that the big artists attract the publicity since it is all about Africa more could have been done to include African musicians.

Mind you at the moment you are lucky to be watching. Yesterday we had a new set top digibox installed by our cable provider NTL but it failed after three hours. Since mid day yesterday I have been trying to have it fixed and NTL has failed so far to get an engineer around to fix it depsite repeated promises and us begging that we were looking forward to Live 8 on BBC1.
So far today then of all days, no TV and don't know if and when they will get to us!

The BBC said, in its short summary of the concert in South Africa, that Nelson Mandela was going to make an appearance, but there was no indication of what he was planning to sing.

I'm sure the BBC did a couple of cuts to the Cornwall venue, that is before 5pm UK time. They were short segments as they have also being showing short pieces from Tokyo, Rome, Berlin, Paris, Toronto and a main one to Philadelphia.
I enjoyed REM and will be tuning in again tonight to see Snow Patrol as they are from very near where I used to live.

We did get TV back later in the afternoon but I did miss U2 I'm afraid. Enjoyed seeing the Who and Pink Floyd back together, but very moved by Bob Geldof's presentation of the young Ethiopian woman who was last seen at death's door in the Live Aid footage. It gave a real sense of hope.
Watch out for Geldof in Africa this evening (BBC1 7.30 pm) as it shows the places I travel to when I am in and out of south Sudan.
